Steven M. Carr

Professor of Computer Science Western Michigan University

Dr. Carr is a professor of computer science at Western Michigan University. He earned his Ph.D. at Rice University in 1993 under Ken Kennedy, and spent nineteen years on the faculty at Michigan Technological University before coming to WMU in 2012.

His research began in optimizing compilers — memory-hierarchy management, data locality, scalar replacement, and code generation for instruction-level-parallel and embedded architectures — and has since grown to include software and file-system security, dynamic program analysis, and the design of visualization tools that make security and concurrency concepts teachable. Much of that educational work has been supported by the National Science Foundation.
